How to measure an exterior door

How to Measure for an Exterior Door
Study the drawing carefully..... it is the inside view.
Note that older homes may have thicker jambs and the thresholds may be different.
Jamb size is measured from the back side of the brickmold to the inside face of door as pictured.
Doors come in 2" increments i.e. 32", 34",36" etc and indicate the size of the part that swings which is called the door slab.
So the door pictured above is a 36" or a 3'0" right hand door. It needs a rough opening of 38" by 82" and the outside dimensions are 40" by 82 7/8 ". You would simply order a 36" right hand exterior door with a 4 9/16" jamb size.
